If you are caught walking your friends through security points at KIA you will go home – Interior Minister warns Immigration officers

The Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey has vowed to deal with Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officers who abuse the power of their uniforms to favour their friends at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

According to him, he has become aware of how officers dress in their Immigration uniform to escort their friends to the airport and walk them through checking and even security points.

Speaking during his visit to Ghana Immigration Service headquarters in Accra on Thursday, April 4, Henry Quartey described this conduct as unprofessional.

He warned that any officer caught displaying such behaviour at the Kotoka International Airport would be sent home for a long time.

“Men and women wear uniforms only to go and see off their friends at the Airport. They pull their bags right from the car, and walk through checking, walk them through immigration and even security points all the way.

“When you disembark you see them lined up waiting for their friends, they take their bags. I have told the CG to send a message to them that it has to stop with immediate effect, and I mean immediate effect.

“We will send plain clothes to go there, if an immigration officer is found around the arrival hall, or departure hall, engaging passengers please consider that you will be at home for a long time and that will be coming from me, not the CG. So, tell them,” Henry Quartey said.

In his engagement, the Interior Minister admonished the country’s immigration officers to help ensure there is a free, fair, and transparent election this year.

He urged all officers to mind their uniform and work in the interest of Ghana at all times.
