Werley Nortreus, a Haitian politician, congratulated and thanked the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for approving an international intervention for Haiti. The Caribbean nation has been facing violence and crimes for a long period of time. Now, the UNSC approved the requests of interested nations to begin the intervention very soon.
Nortreus said he has sent letters to all parties involved to find a solution to the insecurity crisis. He also said this new historic UN-approved intervention is an opportunity not to take for granted.
Last year, the current Haitian government, led by Prime Minister Ariel Henry, first requested an intervention from the UN and the United States, but most Haitians around the world opposed that. After the request of the Prime Minister faced opposition, interested nations from Africa and CARICOM have volunteered to participate.
Kenya offered police or soldiers to Haiti in order to reduce violence and crimes by disarming the gangs and those who financed them. Nations from CARICOM also offered police or soldiers. In October, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) approved an international intervention led by Kenya in Haiti after debates.
According to Nortreus, the new UN-approved intervention will help reduce violence and crimes across the Caribbean nation in order to finish all the steps.
“I congratulate the United Nations Security Council for approving an international intervention for Haiti. Everyone knows the Caribbean nation has been facing many acts of violence and crimes committed by gangs and their accomplices over the past few years and now. I took my time to write and send letters to all parties involved in order to find a solution to the insecurity crisis this nation is facing. This new historic UN-approved intervention is an opportunity not to take for granted. The first step has succeeded; the next steps must be constitution reform and a general election in order to finish the mission or goals of the December agreement signed by the Haitian government and citizens. I strongly believe that together we can help restore peace and order in this nation. I also would like to thank the United Nations and interested nations for being so supportive” Nortreus says about the new UN-approved international intervention in Haiti.
Last year, Nortreus created a petition that asked the Haitian government to amend the current constitution to give younger politicians the right to participate in the upcoming elections for the Executive and the Legislature. At the beginning of this year, the government announced that they would reform the constitution, add security, and hold a general election after signing an agreement in December last year. Nortreus is a rising politician who's been asking the government to include younger candidates in politics.
“The only way to have a new Haiti is to establish a new constitution that gives candidates who are 25 years old and older the right to run for a position among the three branches of the government according to their choice. A new constitution where everyone is included is the only way Haitians will be able to change the miserable situation that Haiti is in because of its old constitution”, Nortreus said about why he created the petition.
This year, the Caribbean country signed a diplomatic agreement with Kenya, according to reports. Before that, a Kenyan delegation visited it and proposed a plan to secure roads, airports, ports, and state assets, and disarm gangs and their accomplices.
Kenya and other interested nations will soon send their police or soldiers to the Caribbean nation, but no date has been revealed yet. The Caribbean nation also plans to amend the constitution through a referendum or directly and hold a general election, but no date has been revealed yet.
