Tamale Central Member of Parliament (MP), Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed has expressed worry about what he describes as the politicisation of the Ghana Police Service under the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Concerns of politicisation in the Police Service have come up in the past couple of months after an audio recording of a plot to remove the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was leaked.

The audio captured a conversation between former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Chief Bugri Naabu, and some top Policemen including COP George Alex Mensah and Supt. George Asare.

In the conversation, they are heard making the argument that the ruling New Patriotic Party will struggle to win the 2024 General Election to break the 8 if IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is not removed.

On Tuesday, September 12, the IGP went before the Parliamentary Committee probing the leaked audio tape to address various allegations made against him by COP George Alex Mensah and Supt. George Asare.

Speaking to Joy News on the fallout of that engagement, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed said he nearly shed tears listening to the IGP.

“I nearly shed tears when Dampare appeared before the committee. The politicization of the Police Service under this government is frightening,” the Tamale Central MP said.

During his engagement with the Parliamentary Committee, the IGP denied the allegation that he was mismanaging the service and stressed that he is focused on transforming the service.
