Opinion Prioritize Empowerment Of Zongo Women--An Open Letter To Prof. Jaane Naana
AUG 14, 2020 LISTEN

Dear Professor Jaane Naana Agyemang,

On Wednesday, August 12 2020, His Excellency Former President John Dramani Mahama officially introduced you to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, a cross-section of Muslim leaders and chiefs as his running mate for the 2020 Election.

That event marks the beginning of your political convenant with the Zongo/Muslim community.

Clearly, Gender Empowerment is a key issue the NDC is advancing and nobody can underestimate neither the impact of Women Population in Ghana nor your capacity and qualification as a running mate.

Ma, your outdooring speech was assuring and I believe you have a lot to contribute beyond gender!

However, i am writing to draw your attention to an important group within the NDC, that you found it paramount to single out for special acknowledgement at the event, 'Zongo Women', who made your outdooring colorful and cheerful.

If and when you get the opportunity to serve the high office of the Vice President of the Republic, do remember to champion their empowerment and integral inclusion.

'Zongo women', our mothers, sisters, wives, grandmothers, are vibrant, loyal, enthusiastic, and hardworking fabric for the grassroots mobilization in their communities. A role they have played from the period of Inception till date.

With the gender card on the table, it's important your party (the NDC) ensue a special plan to empower and build the capacity of these important Zongo group and their likes in other societies of Ghana .

'Zongo Women', most of whom are Micro Small Medium Enterprise(s) traders and are not candidates for the National Security appointments like their male counterparts. Many of the NDC Zongo Caucus Magajiyas (Women leaders) from the National to local levels needs to be empowered, mentored; included in critical decision making process, and their efforts amplified.

Ma, let the gift they presented to you and the veil you wore forever remind you of this group and champion their empowerment from now on. It's only when you do that, then you will be giving true meaning to your words ''all our ancestors have contributed to the Space called Ghana''

Thank you

Yours faithfully,

Alhaji Abdulsalam Mohammed Daaru (Consultant Daaru)
