The sports fraternity in Ghana is commemorating the death of some 126 football fans who perished in a gory incident of crowd violence at the Accra Sports Stadium during a Hearts-Kotoko league match.

The May 9 Stadium disaster has been described as the worst of its kind on the continent.

But five years on, celebrations of this day has been muted.

The sports ministry has outlined a special program for today's commemoration but the National Chapter Committee of Accra Hearts of Oak have their own plans of celebrating this sorrowful occasion.

Neil Armstrong Mortagbe is the chairman of the umbrella body of the Hearts supporters.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko will not be left out of the celebration.

The Accra representative of Kotoko, Kwame Amoa Bosompem, says the May 9 commemoration is a good reminder of the need for peace in sports.
