MAR 16, 2017 LISTEN

Ghanaian winger Frank Acheampong came off the bench to score the only goal for Anderlecht as they edge out Cypriot side Apoel Nicosia 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 on Thursday.

The Belgian giants showed promise in the early stages of the game and could have taken the lead in the 4th minute when striker Lukasz Theodorczyk found himself behind the opposition's defence, but his tame effort went straight into the waiting arms of goalkeeper Boy Waternam.

Ghanaian winger Frank Acheampong broke the deadlock of the match with his first touch of the ball after coming on for Niculae Stanciu in the 65th minute when he reacted quickest to tuck home a bound shot to give his the 1-0 win.

Anderlecht edge out Apoel Nicosia 2-0 on aggregate after winning the first leg by the same score line in Nicosia.

Ghanaian-born French defender Denis Appiah played the entire duration of the game for the Belgian side as they match on to the quarter final stage.

Anderlecht will be awaiting their quarter final opponent when the draw is made on Friday at Nyon, Switzerland.
