Ex- Malian international Frédéric Oumar Kanouté has lauded Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan for equaling Roger Milla's record as Africa's all-time top scorer at the World Cup.

Gyan scored his fifth goal at the World Cup against Germany on Saturday to equal the former Cameroonian striker's record as the only African players to have scored five times at the global soccer showpiece event.

The Ghana captain had scored four goals in his two previous World Cup appearances in 2006 and 2010 respectively before scoring against the German's on Saturday to take his tally to five at the World Cup.

Kanouté, the 2007 African Footballer of the Year Award winner, who scored many goals in his days as a striker for his national team (Mali), believes it is a great inspiration for the 28-year-old Ghana striker to reach Milla's goal-scoring tally at the World Cup.

'He is a very good player, and many people are surprised that he plays in the UAE League. Especially with our generation it is fantastic to meet the level of Roger Milla. I remember when we were kids we watch the World Cup and for us is an example. It is a great inspiration for him to reach his goal scoring at the World Cup. And I think he is great', the 36-year-old stated.

Gyan could set a new record if he scores in Ghana's final group game against Portugal on Thursday June 26th.
