Big blow: Falcao misses out on World Cup

Colombia have announced the final cuts to their squad for this summer's World Cup - and the big news is that Falcao will miss out.

In what promises to be a competitive Group C, Colombia will take on Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan as they look to impress at their first World Cup since France '98. Jose Pekerman's side come as many people's pick to be a dark horse, but there remains little expectation on the South Americans.

The team is littered with star players from around Europe, such as Napoli full backs Juan Zuniga and Pablo Armero, Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin, wide men Juan Cuadrado and James Rodriguez, and striker Jackson Martinez. With plenty of technique and athleticism, Colombia can be a match for anyone on their day - but their key player is out of the tournament.

Star striker Falcao sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury in January whilst playing for Monaco, and whilst there were hopes that he would be fit for the competition, it's simply come too soon for the sensational hitman.

With Falcao's absence confirmed, here is the 23-man squad selected by Colombia for this summer's World Cup.

Goalkeepers : David Ospina (Nice), Faryd Mondragon (Deportivo Cali), Camilo Vargas (Santa Fe)

Defenders : Mario Yepes (Atalanta), Juan Camilo Zuniga (Napoli), Pablo Armero (Napoli), Cristian Zapata (AC Milan), Carlos Valdes (San Lorenzo), Santiago Arias (PSV Eindhoven), Eder Alvarez Balanta (River Plate)

Midfielders : Fredy Guarin (Inter Milan), Abel Aguilar (Toulouse), Carlos Sanchez (Elche), Aldo Leao Ramirez (Morelia), Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina), James Rodriguez (Monaco), Alexander Mejia (Atletico Nacional), Juan Quintero (Porto)

Forwards : Teofilo Gutierrez (River Plate), Jackson Martinez (Porto), Adrian Ramos (Borussia Dortmund), Carlos Bacca (Sevilla), Victor Ibarbo (Cagliari)
