Bolgatanga, Aug. 7 GNA - Parents and guardians of children in basic schools would no longer pay sports and cultural fees as from next academic year, an Assistant Director of the Bolgatanga Municipal Directorate of Education, Mr William Ayelyine has said.
He, therefore, urged parents to use the extra money to provide their children with the basic needs to encourage them to stay in school. Mr Ayelyine, who was addressing the end of year general meeting of the Parents-Teacher Association (PTA) of the Bolgatanga Methodist Basic Schools on Wednesday said, the proper upbringing of children is the collective responsibility of the family, school and the community as a whole.
"As parents, it is your responsibility to take proper care of your wards at home, monitor their behaviour, regulate the time they spend viewing television and show more interest in their performance in school", he said.
The PTA Chairman, Mr Paul Gbanlee said, since July 2001, the Association through voluntary contributions of parents has been able to raise more than 12 million cedis to expand facilities in the schools.
Mr Gbanlee said about 11 million cedis had already been spent to mould blocks for a new classroom building and to plaster the junior secondary school block, and urged parents to continue to contribute to ensure quality education for their children.
He appealed to parents and guardians to visit the schools regularly to acquaint themselves with the performance of their wards and the problems of school authorities.
The Headmistress of the school, Madam Regina Atia, in her report said, Link Community Development (LCD), a British non-governmental organization has equipped teachers with skills to enhance their performance.
She regretted, however, that the performance of the JSS, which used to top most public schools in the municipality, has fallen because of shortage of teachers, and lack of textbooks and furniture.
The Bolgatanga Central Circuit Supervisor, Mrs Lucy Aziabah appealed to parents not to overburden their children with work at home, such that, they would not have time for studies.
