Tema Youth FC President, Wilfred Osei Kwaku Palmer, believes Thomas Partey has the potential to become a better footballer than Michael Essien.

Partey has been compared to Essien, who won Premier League titles, FA Cup and Champions League for the past months.

Essien's was largely a dominant midfielder at club sides Lyon, Chelsea and to some extent Real Madrid where he had a loan stint.

His versatility was never in question as he also flourished in roles at Center Back and right back. He was generally known for his excellent tough tackling and explosiveness in the middle of the park.

However, Essien was denied such majestic performances for Ghana in the long term as his career was blighted by injuries.

Partey has been in a fine form following his move to Arsenal this summer from Atletico Madrid on a transfer deadline day.

He is slightly different as he possesses mesmeric ball-winning abilities and has composure and charisma while in possession of the ball.

His goal scoring abilities is never in question as he’s been a regular scorer for both club and country.

According to Osei Palmer, comparing both players is a mismatch but stressed that both players have similar qualities.

“They share a similar role,” Palmer told The Mail.

“Essien was box-to-box and also applies the brain-work. Thomas has got good timing, energy but not as boisterous. In terms of power and drive, they have similar qualities. He can turn a defensive position into an offensive opportunity.

The former Ghana Football Association [GFA] Executive Committee member further said Partey will grow to become a better player than Michael Essien.

“He plays long searching passes. Thomas will grow and have better qualities than Essien, trust me. Yes, Thomas will give you something better,” he added.

Partey joined the Gunners in a deal worth £45million. He made debut for the Ghana national team in 2016 under Avram Grant.

Palmer coached Essien at St Augustine’s College.
