The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Hassan Tampuli has said the implementation of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) is being designed “to ensure the existence of robust and standard Health, Safety and Environmental practices”, in the country.

Speaking during the Tamale edition of the CRM stakeholder engagement, Mr. Tampuli said the CRM aims to provide “direction for marketing and distribution of LPG in a safe and efficient manner”.

He explained that the implementation of the policy would also increase nationwide access to LPG.

There has been fierce resistance from stakeholders in the LPG value chain including the Ghana LPG Operators Association some of whom have vowed to resits attempts to use its members’ retail outlets as part of the policy.

But in making a case for the implementation of the policy, he said the current LPG distribution model, Hassan Tampuli said, “lives cannot be lost at the expense of financial gains.” in the Bolgatanga leg of the tour a day earlier, he recounted some “unfortunate accidents” that the industry had experienced in recent times. These he said were “as a result of the misuse and inappropriate handling of petroleum products, especially Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).”

He further gave assurances to stakeholders that the CRM will not lead to job losses, as is being speculated. He said it will rather “lead to enormous job creation across the various value chain”.

Participants in the CRM stakeholder engagement included chiefs and elders, queenmothers, as well as individuals and associations representing various LPG consumers across the country.
