The Constituency Chairman for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Suame, Ashanti Region, Saeed Umar, was attacked by some assailants on Monday. The assailants are alleged to be some NDC supporters who demanded he returns a vehicle belonging to the party.

A court in Kumasi asked Umar to step aside after his victory as chairman for the constituency was challenged by some delegates.

The development is said to have deepened the wrangling within NDC members in the constituency, with some insisting Umar returns all properties belonging to the party in his possession.

A meeting with some constituency chairmen and delegates from the Suame and Tafo-Pankrono Constituencies with one of the party's presidential aspirants, Sylvester Mensah was halted after a confrontation ensued between the chairman and some party supporters.

“I was late for the meeting and when I arrived, I decided to eat before joining in. In the process, three guys confronted me and said they came to take the party's vehicle from me,” Umar told Citi News.

“I asked them if they had given me any vehicle and before I realized, they pounced on me and started beating me.”

He said two other guys “who parade themselves as security coordinators in the Suame constituency who had guns on them also came in.”

At this point, Umar said he handed the car key to another person to move the car to the nearest police station.

“They chased the driver on motorbikes amidst firing gunshots. When they were approaching the police station, they fired at the vehicle and deflated the tires.”

Meanwhile, police at Suame have taken custody of the vehicle in question and have also invited those behind the disturbances to report later today, Tuesday.

A medical form was issued to the victim to be taken to the hospital for examination and treatment.
