Government Of Ghana Prevented Coalition Of Volta Youth From Demonstrating On Aflao Road, Why Allow NDC To Do Unity Walk On The Same Road?

07.06.2018 LISTEN
By Coalition of Volta youth

Nation-State democracy that countries are practicing today have a mechanism and institution that is supposed to apply and work equally for all citizens as a modern improvement on the polis (city-state) democracy as in the ancient Athens.

It has being argued intellectually that democracies are not prone to war and Human Right violations, a transformation in political ideas and institutions among the Greeks to the discovery of a new world and possibilities. And also, it is worldwide accepted among democracies of which Ghana is proud to be a democratic State, that, modern democracy is a buildup upon Athenians democracy, the rule of the people (the demos).

That being the case and the genesis of democracy, the Athenians had referred to equality as desirable characteristics of their political system: equality of all citizens in the right to speak in the governing assembly and equality before the law.

Today, the kind of democracy we are seeing in Ghana is nothing comparable to the true democracy but rather the tyranny of the majority of which our cherished Volta Region has been a victim.

It is unfortunate that government of Ghana is using the democratic institutions and mechanisms against the people of the Volta Region, depriving them of exercising their political rights.

Coalition of Volta Youth, a month piece of the youth in the Volta Region, in exercising our liberty, political and democratic rights and statutory obligation, we informed Ghana police service of our intended demonstration to register our displeasure concerning the division of the Volta Region at Aflao on the 26 April 2018 hit the rock when the Inspector General of Police (IGP) took us to Circuit Court in Aflao without our notice and went to Court alone and sought an injection against our demonstration and it was granted.

A ruling by the Circuit Court Judge, Ali Baba Abuture ESQ state that “…AND UPON HEARING the applicant in court and for the sake of peace and security in the jurisdiction especially in the light of current political instability in neighbouring Lome (Togo) which is just a stone thrown away the application is granted”. Before the Court injection, a police statement signed by Mr. Alex Amenyo, Assistant Commissioner of Police/KDiv, to Mr. Simon Ohene the leader of the Coalition of Volta Youth also state that “…security threats as a result of the political instabilities in nearby Lome-Togo among others which has the tendency of disrupting the public peace in Aflao and its immediate communities”.

Even though, it’s on record as part of judicial review and precedence, a High Court ruling in favor of Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) in 2015 by Justice Dominic Dennis that “the Circuit Court cannot be the right platform to prohibit Ghanaians from embarking on a demonstration”, yet still it has happened to us the people of Volta Region. The right to demonstration is not only a political rights, it is also our democratic right, Human right and constitutional right that need to be protected and guaranteed by the very democratic institution that has seen to this woeful violations.

Though we obeyed the Aflao Circuit Court ruling by Judge Ali Baba Abuture ESQ, we were flabbergasted of not knowing what have caused the bench to compromise the integrity of the Court and avoided due process in our case. We thought Justice Dominic Dennis 2015 ruling in favor of LMVCA was for all citizens of Ghana and that the Circuit Court cannot overrule it on ex-parte motion. Except that the people of the Volta Region are judged by their language and names and not as Ghanaians.

The political instability in Lome-Togo remain the same but the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to embark on a unity walk on the same Aflao road in the Volta Region, on June 9, 2018

Why the NDC can’t be prevented on embarking on the unity walk if the Ghana Police is genuinely concerned about the security of the people in Aflao.

What is good for the goose should be good for the gander. If Aflao road is not safe for Voltarians to embark on demonstration, it should also not be safe for NDC unity walk, bearing in mind that political situation in Lome-Togo remained the same.

The rights of the people of the Volta Region has been violated for far too long. The discrimination and marginalizing of the people in the Volta Region is no longer acceptable.

The two major political parties in Ghana (NDC and the NPP) are not impeccable of the violations that Volta Region has been subjected to.

It is self-evident that Volta Region existed outside the democratic and human rights box of Ghana. Should the Volta Region become a political party before it could enjoy the desirable equality of democracy as enjoyed by other regions?

Coalition of Volta Youth wish to state here unmistakably that, the group is closely watching with Eagle eyes.

The unfortunate political antics, bias and bigotry of the NDC and the NPP leveled against the Volta Region is greatly regretted.

It is however wrong for Ghana political parties to turn equality, freedom and justice to be the enemy of the Volta Region. We will continue to judge Ghana by the qualities of excellence and equalities it fosters in Volta Region.

We also wish to tell the people of the Volta Region that the progress of the Volta Region does not lie in the gimmick politics of any political party in Ghana. So as the total freedom of the Region does not lie in Ghana politics.

In the hands and the collective efforts of the Voltarians towards the total restoration of Western Togoland lies the advancement of our beloved Volta Region.

Continuous royalty of Volta Region to any political party in Ghana is psychological insult to the intelligence of the people of the Volta Region. We therefore ask that any support given to any political party in Ghana in the past should remain history and must not continue. We are convinced that the Volta Region stands to benefit immensely from Peoples’ Liberation Council’s (PLC) advocacy for liberation and development from which Western Togoland can gain all forms of freedom surely through education, advocacy and promotion of development, the entire Western Togoland can move into freedom from ignorance, oppression and luck of development without waiting for the fulfillment of party manifestos and campaign talks of politicians. It is only when our rights as humans is restored and respected that we and society can benefit from our existence.

Torgbuiwo, Mamawoo and the youth across the length and breadth of the former Togoland under British Administration, Western Togoland can be free and enjoyed their God given inalienable rights if we can support the PLC with our collective efforts to drive our development.

Thank you.
Dully signed.
