The teachers and students of the Tepa Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS) in the Ahafo-Ano North District, have expressed concern about their health safety and are calling the authorities to action.
They said dumping of refuse right behind the school and open defecation in the compound by people in the community had become a major health hazard, they had been struggling with.
Mr. Isaac Gyamfi, the head teacher, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the overpowering stench was worrying and affecting teaching and learning in the school.
'It is not looking good and that everybody is deeply upset about what is happening'.
He indicated that the teachers and students could hardly sit in the poorly ventilated classrooms in the afternoon because of the foul smell.
Mr. Gyamfi added that they were often forced to study under trees during that time of the day.
He also complained about the installation of a rice mill close to the school and said that was creating noise nuisance.
He therefore called for the appropriate authorities to act quickly to tackle the environmental health danger.
He asked that everything was done to create the right environment for smooth academic work.
