Flood victims to receive relief items- Minister

Tamale, July 31, GNA - The Northern Regional Co-ordinating Council, is expected to receive large quantity of relief items for onward distribution to flood victims.

Mr Salifu Saeed, the Regional Minister told the GNA in an interview on Monday that the Region was expecting the items on Tuesday, August 1, for distribution.

He said trucks loaded with relief items were on their way to the Region and gave the assurance that all those affected by the floods that claim four lives would benefit.

Mr Saeed explained that distribution of relief items to the affected persons delayed because a thorough assessment of the situation had to be done to know the extent of damage and number of persons affected.

He has therefore appealed to politicians to stop politicising the tragedy since government would not abandon its people including those in Region.

"Trucks are on their way coming to Tamale fully loaded with relief items and until we receive the waybill I cannot specifically mention what they contained", he said.

Alhaji Abdallah Hindu, Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation said a total of four persons were confirmed dead in the floods.

He mentioned Hajia Fati Bapuni, a female teacher and three other children, two boys and a girl who also perished in the floods.

He said 5,899 persons in the Sagnerigu District and the Tamale Metropolis had been affected by the floods while 683 houses from the same area had also been affected.

Alhaji Hindu said Salaga, Nanumba North, Kpandai and Central Gonja Districts and the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality had also suffered from the floods.

He appealed to all affected persons in the Region to remain patient since no one would left out in the distribution of the relief items to alleviate their plight.
