A 20-member neighborhood watch committee has been inaugurated to serve the Bofaaso and Pamuruso communities in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The trained community volunteers who are to work without monetary gains resolved to work and make the Bofaaso and Pamuruso communities safer by assisting the police in Nyinahin to combat crime.

The Assembly member for Chirayaaso Electoral Area of the Atwima Mponua District, Kofi Sarpong made the clarion call on the police command to as a matter of urgency inaugurate the committee members in order for the two communities to enjoy peace.

Inaugurating the committee, the Nyinahin District Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Christian Dogbatse asked the members not to relent in their operations in complementing the work of the Police in the fight against the emerging trend of armed robbery and theft in Atwima Mponua.

He advised them to live beyond reproach and not to involve themselves in any form of criminality so as to earn the respect and trust of the community members. Every person is equal before the law and they must not discriminate in their approach to duty.

They are to guard against using guns, brutalising suspects and infringing on their rights, saying all suspects are innocent until proven guilty by court of law.

ASP Mr Christian Dogbatse spelt out their mandate as policing the community by vigorous patrols, arresting suspects and handing them over to the police for investigation and prosecution. They are to avoid the temptation of settling cases among themselves for monetary gain.

The police command promised to defend them at all times against criminals and other miscreants who would see their work as obstacle to their nefarious activities and would want to do anything possible to discourage them.

The chief of Bofaaso, Nana Kusi Asante said they can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their properties are safe from theft and robbery, and that the illegal chainsaw operators who plunder their forests will soon be a thing of the past.

The Chief promised to support the sacrificial work of the members in whichever way he can in order to serve as a morale booster for the volunteers.

He advised them to desist from drinking which could cloud their judgment in the way they handle information, saying lose talks could make them a target in the communities and put their lives at risk. They are prohibited from sitting in beer bars to discuss those who cause mayhem since they never know who is listening to them.
