Halt To The Police Shoot To Kill Black Men In The USA

28.09.2016 LISTEN

The history of the United States of America (USA) is undoubtedly associated with racism but also mired in relentless struggles waged by African-Americans for the respect of their civil and human rights. Even white supremacist hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan that has been operating since the 19th century were not able to break down the determination of the democratic and anti-racist forces.

Eight years ago with the election of Barack Obama as the first African-American president of USA, the world was very delighted and hopeful that racism had come to the final stage of its existence hence it is fading out. However just weeks to the 2016 elections in the USA, we are witnessing an ascendance of police brutalities against the members of African-Americans community mainly resulting in most cases at the killing of innocent and armless people. It is shocking to know that the only current superpower in the world- USA- is not respectful of human rights. According to Amnesty International, US laws do not meet international human rights standards for use-of-force by law enforcement. Only eight States require a verbal warning by police officers before shooting, it added.

The lack of official statistics of people killed by the police has motivated the Guardian newspaper to run its own database, The Counted, which tracked US killing by police and other law enforcement agencies. In 2015 The Counted brought to light that 1140 people were killed with rates per million of 2.92 for “Whites” people, 7.2 for “Blacks”, 3.5 for “Asian/pacific Islander” and 3.4 for “Native Americans”. Considering the fact that the Black community represents only 13% of the population of USA, these figures are highly disproportionate.

The ascendant police brutal attacks on African-Americans in recent time are tormenting and not acceptable. The killing of Alton Sterling from Louisiana and Philando Castile from Minnesota should be the last of such barbaric acts that cause civilized world to grieve and scream.

End to the shootings and killings of innocent people!

Down with racism!
Respect for human rights!
