It has become imperative on the global community to engage the youth in peace building efforts due to the impact conflicts has on the youth and the fact that the world is becoming more youth oriented in all aspects of life. The Resolution 2250 was adopted by the United Nations Security Council on the 9th of December 2015.
The resolution enjoins parties of armed conflicts to protect young people during conflicts and post conflict situations. It calls on governments to promote youth participation in processes of peace building and peace keeping at all levels including peace processes and dispute resolution mechanisms.
2250 also urges governments of member countries to facilitate an enabling environment for the youth, to prevent violence and to create policies which support youth socio-economic developments and education for peace as well as equipping the youth with the ability to engage in political processes. Member states are also urged to to support youth peace efforts in conflicts and post conflict settings, including through the work of United Nations bodies involved in peace building and development.
Parties involved in disarmament, demobilization and reintegration are also urged to ensure that programs are designed to consider the special needs of the youth in these processes and finally it enjoins the United Nation General Secretary to carry out a study on the impact of conflict on young people and their contributions to peace and to report to the security council on the implementation of the resolution in a year time.
The implementation of this resolution needs a hands-on approach. The United Network of young Peace builders, a network of youth peace building organizations with its headquarters in The Hague championed this novelty; The Young Peace Brigades its local chapter will be championing the advocacy and implementation programs in Ghana. The youth should arise and get involved in the peace building efforts of their respective countries to help for the greater good for the greatest number of people.
