Agricultural Workers call off demonstration

By GNA

Accra, Oct. 8, GNA - The General Agricultural Workers' Union (GAWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Friday said it had called off its planned solidarity demonstration and rally scheduled for Monday October 11.

It also said it had ended their 12-day-old hunger strike, a statement Mr Stephen Nyame-Yeboah signed said.

The industrial action was to press home demands for a bargaining certificate to cover the Forestry Sector and Wildlife Division Workers. The statement explained that the main demand was for an immediate, prompt and appropriate intervention by the Sector Minister to resolve the long drawn issue pertaining to the issuance of a bargaining certificate.

The statement said the Sector Minister had intervened and called a meeting on Friday October 8, which would be continued on Monday October 11.

It said: "Consistent with confidence in the Sector Minister and in all fairness to due processes underway to resolve the issue once and for all, we are calling off the planned solidarity demonstration and rally scheduled for Monday, 11 October."

The statement expressed appreciation for the role the media played in creating awareness for their demands.
