Accra, Aug. 22, GNA - The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in fulfilment of Government's social democratic commitment has donated assorted food items to elderly women and men in Accra for the Homowo festivities.
The items include 250 bags of maize, boxes of meat, food stuff, and assorted drinks.
Nana Oye Lithur, the Gender Minister, who made the presentation at Osu, explained that the National Democratic Congress is working to ensure that the elderly in particular and all Ghanaians live in comfort.
She said Government remains committed to make sure that social intervention programmes are carried through successfully and those who need it receive it.
She said this year, the Gender Ministry launched the Eban Elderly Welfare Card, to enable senior citizens to enjoy preferential treatment in the use of some social services.
The card allows the aged, 65 years and above, to board the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses at a 50 per cent reduced fare as well as receive preferential treatment to skip queues in banks, hospitals and get priority in accessing services in other places.
Nana Oye Lithur said the Gender Ministry is also negotiating with other private transport unions to offer similar services to the aged.
The Gender Minister said 1,200 beneficiaries have been covered so far while registration of about 25,000 beneficiaries is about to start across the country this August.
She said 5,000 elderly persons have also been registered onto the NHIS free of charge. 'This has been achieved through collaboration between the Ministry and National Health Insurance Authority.'
For the first time Ghana participated in the 6th Session of the UN Open Ended Working Group on Ageing and presented a statement on rights of the elderly in Ghana.
The Ministry of Gender and the Ministry of Health, and Denmark in February 2015 signed a memorandum of understanding to mainstream geriatrics into the health care delivery system.
She said the cooperation between the parties to the agreement would include financial and technical support for geriatric education by incorporating and mainstreaming geriatrics into the main nursing and medical curriculum in Ghana.
It would also include financial and technical support for a trainer-of-trainers programme to develop a geriatrics curriculum in Ghana's nursing colleges and medical schools beginning with the government nursing colleges.
The Ministry celebrated the National Senior Citizen Day with a health walk and health screening. More than 150 elderly persons in Accra benefited from the programme.
Nii Aneafi, Osu Alata Dzaasetse, commended the Gender Ministry for the support for the elderly and other social intervention programmes.
