Enslaved And Colonised By Our Educated Ghanaians?
06.07.2015 LISTEN

Just as it sounds despicable to learn that the police have commited a crime, or a relative has raped a kindred, so does it when it is realised that our own educated Ghanaians are enslaving and colonising their illiterate compatriots at times more than the Europeans did! Are we to continue to revere our colonial education that could not appreciate our human and natural endowments but trail and depend on the European even from here?

It is obviously unfair that Ghanas policy of free education would virtually take the food from the mouths of these illiterate Ghanaians to sponsor all Ghanaian children till graduation and then they decide to live like Europeans while their sponsors struggle to eke out basic living standards in their villages and city slums! Our educated elites have gradually developed the extravagant lifestyles that even leaves our Colonial masters in awe maybe because some are itching to be equated to the Europeans or simply sees education as an exploiting channel rather than for self and environmental development.

A nation like Ghana even in their HIPC situation cannot tolerate ten-year old imported vehicle on her road, and would rather buy new ones worth a hundred times more for her officials, whereas even the Europeans themselves, would not do so. As at today, it is noteworthy that in the equivalent of our Parliament floor in Britain their "parliamentarians" share bench-like seats whereas ours seek gold-plated furniture and state-of the arts gadgets to make our law! They say it is because, "Democracy is expensive," as if the British donot know this as they share seats in their "Parliament"?

From the beginning of 2012 when NDC forced to create more districts probably as a ploy to win more votes, the supply of expensive SUV and other vehicles to non-state personalities, the follow-up heavy expenses on Ghana government and her workers, gargantuan ex-gratia awards, excessive number of the executive, etc. how did our education fail to enlighten our educated that national development does not happen with heavy expenditure here and on consumer imported items for extravagant lifestyles while the private sector is starved of resources for production!

An NDC Parliamentarian Hon Avedzie is quoted this week as saying that workers were paid "single-spine" so they could contain increases in utility tariffs, sadly forgetting that with the ban on government employment, not all of Ghanaians are or can be civil servants to earn "single-spine", and also those in government still enjoy various utility freebies despite their "triple-spine" salary and the nation's hardships. Another MP said some patronise wayside mechanics because they cannot afford the up-to GHS2000 servicing charge at a dealer's workshop, while another who is also a Deputy Minister is even envious of the medical doctors' service conditions ( http://www.myjoyonline.com/politics/2015/June-30th/mps-are-broke-we-rely-on-wayside-mechanics-to-service-our-cars-mp.php )

The prevailing service condition and expenditures in government may seem fair compared to European or other African countries, but this is Ghana government representing HIPC Ghanaians; so we expect better from our representatives! With all the extravagance and wastage through corruption by our educated in government, why do we want to blame Europeans and their institutions? if IMF for example would not just dish out her money to us to waste while they continue sharing seats, are we surprised! Also can we seriously and proudly say that after our independence, Ghana is showing the world that we can indeed manage our own affairs! Let us be careful not to run from a frying pan only to land in the fire itself.
