What Democracy Involves, And Who Is A Democrat?
03 OCT 2014 LISTEN

I am getting unreasonably confused listening to people who claim have huge knowledge in governance affairs and economics.I took time to listen and read submissions by Sydney Casely-Hayford and other commentators on this sudden recovery of our Cedi from depreciation.Cautious optimism is one cardinal attribute of very matured and educated minds.

The vulnerable usually look up to the educated and enlightened ones for hope and directions so, any demeanor which portrays despair or hopefulness, only aggravate the situation of our unfortunate countrymen who may not have the needed capacity to diligently evaluate the situation to inform their thinking.Giving hope and helping to educate the citizens to understand and move in line with policies is one important way of supporting the nation building agenda. To predict doom is not only unfortunate, but an intellectual felony.

The citizen has an even greater responsibility in building our nation.Government action cost money and this may mean a further increase in taxes and other levies. It may involve continuing loss of liberty for example retention of certain controls or freeze on employment and all that.It may in some circumstances call for harder work or a temporary reduction of earnings.

The IMF officials are showing us the way on this issue. This is the sort of consideration which the ordinary citizen has the right to have put before him plainly,so that he can weigh the expected benefits of any line of policy against its expected pains and cost.Yes,i don't and wouldn't support any system which would gag the masses from expressing their genuine feelings,a citizen may criticize vigorously and do all he can to prevent any passage of measure,if he feels so disposed, but ,once the government has decided on its policy, the democratic citizen must come into line and accept the decision of the majority on any contested point.Like i always write in my articles, for only by patience, good homour and loyalty to majority decisions can the democratic system work.

Today, courtesy of our collective vigilance and incessant pressure on the establishment,we are witnessing vigrous approach in fighting corruption and revelations so far vindicate all who have incessantly called for serious investigations into activities in our public institutions, hitherto,we overly concentrated our energies and protests on government leaving miscreants in our state institutions to milk us dry. We accepted corruption in such institutions as conventions which must be adhered to if we want proper and swift facilitation of our problems.Unfortunately, political extremism is blinding some intellectuals from seeing the positive aspects of this anti corruption crusade and action.

Must it take The British Prime Minister to tell the world that our president is on tract talking about corruption fight? The President will not speak with same force in Ghana as he does on international platforms as being demanded by some journalists,he wouldn't do that because here,he has many outlets to flow his intentions, and unfortunately our journalists some of them of course, have suddenly metamorphosed into political animals whose immediate motives aren't about public education of the masses, but castigating the president to win the heroes award from their political paymasters.

So I ask, what are the indicators these intellectual miscreant want to see before becoming hopeful and to see the current situation of the Cedi as real.Gradually, people like Atik whatever is confirming that assertion held by some ghanaians that we give undeserving recognition to some intellectually empty guys who have lost it and using the political platforms to re-launch their tainted political image.Politics is becoming the most comfortable arena for these intellectual charlatans to propel themselves to whichever height they envisage.
