Methodist University To Offer Programmes In Oil And Gas Studies

Authorities of the Methodist University College of Ghana (MUCG) have announced that plans are underway to offer programmes in oil and gas studies at the Dansoman main campus of the school.

The move is to augment the training of the manpower needs of the oil industry in the West African country.

 
This came to light at the 10 th Congregation of the MUCG held at the Dansoman main campus of the university in Accra over the weekend where 1,258, including 153 post graduate students, who had successfully completed their studies, were honoured with certificates and degrees.

 
The Vice President, Mr Paa Kwesi Amissha-Arthur who was the guest speaker expressed confidence in the MUCG's ability to succeed when it introduces these science related programmes very soon.

He pated the back of the MUCG as he put it: 'My confidence comes from the knowledge of the track record of the Methodist Church Ghana in the provision of education and national development since 1835'.

 
According to him, for Ghana to compete effectively in the knowledge-based global economy, we need the best-educated workforce in the most critical disciplines.

 
Mr. Amissah-Arthur was quick to add: 'A sound and balanced education influences an individual's competitiveness and meets the requirements of the global village which requires that today's graduate must be prepared to meet the demands of the national economy and must also possess the ability to compete against other graduates produced in other parts of the world'.

 
Touching on graduate unemployment which remains a major global problem, he noted that the government had initiated many programmes to help address the unemployment canker.

 
However, a lot more needs to be done. Ghana's rapidly expanding economy will no doubt open up employment opportunities for graduates especially in the oil and gas sector after the completion of major projects in that sector, Mr. Amissah-Arthur stated.

 
 
The Principal of the Methodist University College of Ghana, the Very Rev Prof S. K. Adjapong, disclosed that Distance Education in Religious Studies and Ethics would start in September 2013, hoping that it would be able to offer some of it other academic programmes in the Distance Education mode in due course.

On physical developments in the Tema and Wenchi campuses, he said the University had also established the Wesleyan Centre for Continuing Education, which would provide remedial classes for candidates for WASSCE students with deficiencies in their results.

The Very Rev Prof Adjapong advised the graduates to exhibit excellence, morality and be willing to impact positively by upholding virtues that can stand the test of time.

The Rev Prof Emmanuel Asante, President Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana who is also the Chairman of the MUCG Council, noted that, the University runs day, evening and week-end programmes, which has provided flexibility for people, who qualify to pursue university education but are prevented from time constraints, adding 'we are happy to announce that students from all three sessions are graduating today.'

 
He used the occasion to call on private developers to invest in accommodation facilities on the Dansoman campus or in other areas that would encourage the accelerated growth of the University.
