TUC organises health walk to create occupational health awareness

Accra April 28, GNA - Organised Labour of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Saturday organised a health walk along some principal streets of Accra to create awareness about occupational health and safety among workers.

Mr Yaw Baah, Deputy General Secretary of the TUC in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the International Labour Organisation (ILO) celebrates the World Day for Safety and Health at Work annually to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.

Mr Baah noted that April 28 is also a day in which the world's trade union movement holds its International Commemoration Day for dead and injured workers to honour the memory of victims of occupational accidents and diseases.

He said the event was an integral part of the global strategy on occupational Safety and Health of the ILO to promote the creation of a global preventative safety and health culture involving stakeholders.

As part of activities to mark the day, the TUC organised a symposium on April 25 on the role of workers insecurity, peaceful and fair elections and a quiz on April 29 to be climaxed with a national parade on May 1 in Sunyani.

He appealed to workers not to engage in election violence in the impending general election since it is their responsibility to ensure peace to facilitate effective work.

Dr Justice Yankson, Medical Practitioner at Kore-Bu Hospital, lectured the workers on hypertension also known as high blood pressure.

He said some of the causes of hypertension are smoking, intake of too much alcohol, stress, aging, lack of exercises, obesity and bad eating habits.

Dr Yankson said some of the ways of preventing hypertension include regular exercises, reducing the intake of alcohol, consumption of salt and sugar and more importantly visit to the hospital for medical check-up.
