Takoradi, Oct. 10, GNA – Dr. Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu, NASA Senior Robotics Engineer, on Monday called on science students to be innovative and creative in finding solutions to the world's real problems.

He said the time had come for science students to develop leadership skills, self-confidence, and presentation and communication skills through the experiences of robotics competitions.

Dr. Trebi-Ollennu said this at the opening of the southern zone Robotics Inspired Science Education (RISE 2011) workshop for 13 schools in the Western, Central and the Ashanti regions.

The workshop, hosted by the US and Danish embassies, would afford participating senior high school students the opportunity to tackle science situations with LEGO robotics.

He said RISE sought to transform the learning experience of young Ghanaians by connecting science theory with hands-on learning experience.

Dr. Trebi-Ollennu said not only would teachers and students strategize, design, build, programme autonomous robot to solve defined real problems but they would also develop skills for the advancement of science and technology.

Dr. Trebi-Ollennu said through a collaborative multi-partner effort, over 40 robotics science clubs in high schools throughout Ghana had been formed to inspire Ghanaian youth to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Both the US and Danish ambassadors described the workshop as an important element for the development of high technological industry for the country.
