Kumasi Launches First 'Truly' National Newspaper
09 SEP 2009 LISTEN

This Thursday, a new newspaper, “THE THUNDER” will be launched and will be on the newsstands across the country each and every Tuesday. What is different about this newspaper is that it will be published and distributed from Kumasi to every region.

The publishers, Think Tank Media Consult, say “the paper will hit hard like thunder, without fear or favour and will seek to bridge the gap between what is in the public interest and what interests the public.”

Mr. Richard Adjei Mensa, alias Tontom, the Managing Editor says, "having the paper being published in geographically the centre of the country should ensure that we will be the first to reach parts of the country others cannot."

He continues, "The government has promised Ghanaians a better Ghana, I think the Thunder shares part of the responsibility to ensure that better does not turn into bitter. We will be the loudspeaker for the Ashanti Region and the metropolis and we shall also have a national character that makes us unique."

He says there are two main papers published from Kumasi but they struggle to get a national character. "We made a national character and circulation a core of our existence and we will not compromise on that."

As a mark of the paper's apparent political colourlessness, two major personalities invited to grace the occasion are His Excellency the Vice President, Mr. John Dramani Mahama and the 2008 NPP Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
