PIC: Nana Okofo Takyi Abiam, Nkosuohene; and Nana Nimo Twumwaa Achiaa, the Aboafohemaa. It used to be that community development in Ghana was spearheaded almost exclusivley with contributions made by farmers in a given locality. As Ghanaians have travelled in large numbers abroad, citizens in the diaspora have become engines for development in their towns and villages. No where is this phenomenon as apparent as the efforts being made by citizens of Kwamang near Nsuta in the Asante Region of Ghana. For nearly a decade, the citizens of Kwamang in the diaspora have contributed tens of millions of cedis towards the development of specific projects in the town. Projects that these patriotic citizens have embarked upon include the renovation and construction of classroom buildings; the development of pipe borne water; and the renovation and construction of a hospital for the town. The program to ensure that citizens of Kwamang in the diaspora contribute money towards the development of their town is ably led by Nana Okofo Takyi Abiam who resides in Newark, New Jersey, and Nana Nimo Twumwaa Achiaa who lives in Washington, D.C. Indeed, the leadership provided by these two individuals in organizing their fellow citizens to assist in the development of their town has become such a success that the Paramount Chief of Kwaman Traditional Area, Nana Abayie Ntori Nimpa and his elders decided to confer on Okofo Takyi Abiam and Nana Nimo Twumwaa Achiaa (Alias Constance Asamoah) the offices of Nkosuohene; and Aboafohemaa of Kwaman respectively. Every year Nana Abayie Ntroi Nimpa, his elders and the people of Kwaman, host a durbar in Kwaman to welcome their sons and daughters for their contribution to the development of Kwaman. At this year's durbar, the diasporan Kwamang citizens contributed more that 60 million cedis towards community development. Such contributions supplemented by that of the national government is fast turning Kwamang into a showcase as to how a people can effectively assist in community development. With a visionary Paramount Chief, able leadership, and a united citizenry, Kwamang is moving ahead in peace and development.
