Former President, John Dramani Mahama has reminded President Akufo-Addo that he is not the one to choose who succeeds him as President.

Last week, President Akufo-Addo opposed the idea of John Dramani Mahama becoming president again.

In an address to the chiefs and people of Wa, the President said someone he has defeated twice should not be allowed to become his successor.

“Before the election is held, I am going to come here and pay my proper goodbye to you and thank you for the cooperation that I received from you when I was president. God willing, when I come, I will come with the man who is going to be my successor.

"Wa Naa, you know that the man I removed from the seat, I cannot have him as my successor and as a traditional ruler, you understand what I am saying,” President Akufo-Addo said.

In reacting to these comments while speaking at the Gonja Land Youth Congress in Damongo, John Dramani Mahama said they lack substance.

He stressed that President Akufo-Addo has no power to choose a ruler, adding that only God has that power.

“I wish to remind him that it is God who makes rulers and, he can never ever be the one to choose his successor, it is God who will choose the successor,” John Dramani Mahama said.

The former president further called on President Akufo-Addo to ensure the 2024 elections are held peacefully and transparently.

“The best legacy he can leave this country is to superintend over a peaceful, transparent, and credible election,” Mahama said.
