Sunday polls, liberation of Ghanaians - Rawlings
05.12.2008 LISTEN

Ex-President Jerry John Rawlings says next Sunday will be a day to liberate Ghanaians from imprisonment by the NPP as the country goes to the polls to elect a new president and parliamentarians.

He said the elections will free the citizenry from eight years of hardship as Ghanaians are now hard hit by exorbitant charges on utilities and high school fees.

The former president was addressing NDC supporters at a rally in Kumasi to round off the partyʼs campaign in the Ashanti Region.

Enthused by the large crowd the ex-president, accompanied by his wife Nana Konadu, charged TV stations covering the event to report what they witnessed.

He described the elections as the most honourable fight without arms in the lives of Ghanaians since June 4th 1979, and called on the electorate to go to the polls without hesitation.

According to him, Ghana has a herculean task to perform after what he describes as NPPʼs oppressorsʼ rule with Sundayʼs election as the key.

He minced no words in accusing NPP officials of corruption.

Mr. Rawlings predicted victory for the NDC and appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm to ensure violent-free elections.
