The Ghana Mines Workers Union (GMWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has congratulated Mr Kgalema Motlanthe for ascending to the high office of President of South Africa, pending election.

GMWU also congratulated Mr Gwende Mantashe for rising up to the position of General Secretary of the African National Congress (ANC).

A congratulatory message released in Accra on Thursday and signed by Mr Prince William Ankrah, General Secretary of GMWU said: “The union is pleased to recognise the political successes chalked by comrades Gwende Mantashe and Kgalema Motlanthe, the immediate past General Secretary and a former General Secretary respectively of the National Union Mineworkers (NUM) in South Africa.

“We also acknowledge the active involvement of the entire NUM fraternity in the struggles for freedom during apartheid regime, which has not only led them to the attainment of freedom but inspired them to continue to actively participate and contribute their rich experiences and capacity to the political landscape of ANC and their beloved country South Africa”.

The union also saluted the entire NUM for producing such great comrades to assume high political offices and assured them of their continued support.

“The GMWU is urging other African trade unions that developed strong relationship with labour friendly political parties to reassess their roles in the future political landscape of their respective countries”.
