The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has reassured the public that its strong support for education will continue despite changes to its long-running scholarship scheme.
COCOBOD announced it will use funds previously allocated to the cocoa scholarship programme to establish an Education Trust.
This new Trust will invest in improving infrastructure at basic schools in rural cocoa communities.
The scholarship programme provided secondary education access for over 70 years but is no longer as relevant due to free senior high schools nationwide.
In a statement, COCOBOD recognized concerns that this signals a reduction in its education commitments.
However, it strongly stressed, "our commitment to supporting education in Ghana remains unwavering."
It said the Trust will allow COCOBOD to "better serve evolving educational needs in rural communities,” including building classrooms, libraries and teachers' housing.
COCOBOD assured Ghanaians the change represents "a new chapter in our efforts to support the education of wards of cocoa farmers."
The statement emphasized the Board's strategic evolution aims to build on past successes and meet contemporary needs.
