'Your independence shouldn't prevent you from heeding to heeding wisdom' — Peace Council urges Electoral Commission

The National Peace Council has cautioned the Electoral Commission (EC) against misusing its autonomy as the December elections approach.

The Council emphasized the necessity for the EC to be receptive to suggestions that will ensure the elections are free, fair and transparent.

During a press briefing at the launch of the National Elections Response Group, Council member Malvi Mohammed Bin Salih stressed the importance of the EC considering diverse viewpoints.

He warned that the EC must not hide behind its independence to dismiss constructive feedback, as the consequences of any electoral missteps would be severe and unforgiving.

"While the EC is indeed independent, this should not prevent them from listening to Ghanaians and heeding the wisdom of our elders," Bin Salih stated. "They must not, under any circumstances, use their independence as a shield to avoid consultation and feedback."

He added, "If the EC conducts itself properly, it can unite Ghana and promote peace and progress. However, if it fails to act responsibly, it risks fracturing the nation, and posterity will judge them harshly for any resulting turmoil."
