Ghanaian journalist Emmanuel K Dogbevi has been elected deputy chairperson of The Africa Editors Forum (TAEF), a prestigious organisation representing editors and senior journalists across the continent.

The election took place on Tuesday, February 20, at TAEF's bi-annual general meeting held on the sidelines of the Africa Media Festival in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mr Dogbevi will serve in the role alongside newly elected chairperson Churchill Otieno of Kenya.

As deputy chair, the highly experienced Mr Dogbevi, managing editor of Ghana Business News and executive director of News Bridge Africa, said he is committed to supporting press freedom and high standards in African journalism.

"Our election at this crucial moment, particularly so because of the decline of democracy on the continent and the sustainability challenges facing the media, requires that we remain steadfast and continue to work to ensure that journalism on the continent is as important as ever, and journalists feel safe to do their work," Mr Dogbevi said in a statement.

He added that revitalising other editors' forums across the continent, including in Ghana, will be a top priority during his tenure.

“This is by no means an easy task, but has to be done," Mr Dogbevi asserted.

TAEF works to defend media freedom and act as a leading advocacy voice for the media environment in Africa.
