Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected claims by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia that he was responsible for introducing Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) in Ghana.
Delivering his vision speech on Wednesday, February 7, at the University of Professional Studies Accra, the NPP flagbearer said the MMI, championed by him has increased access to digital financial services.
“We faced a major problem of very few people having access to and financial services. To solve this problem, I championed the implementation of Mobile money interoperability (MMI). MMI has made it possible to transfer money seamlessly across different mobile money providers and between bank accounts and mobile wallets,” said Dr. Bawumia.
In his response to the speech, the NDC’s communications director accused Dr. Bawumia of taking undeserved credit and propagating "lies" about MMI.
According to him, "it is not true that Bawumia introduced MOMO interoperability" as the vice president had asserted.
“The first MOMO interoperability system contract was awarded to a company known as SIBTON by the Bank of Ghana in 2016 under the visionary NDC/Mahama government,” said Sammy Gyamfi.
He added that "Bawumia only came to cancel this Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) contract under false pretenses and awarded a new contract to his crony company."
"Even before this government took office, MOMO interoperability had been long conceived and initiated. A contract had been signed to that effect. Bawumia should stop the lies,” he stressed.
