The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) says it supports the Ghana Journalists Association's (GJA) decision to implement a media blackout on Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.
This decision follows an attack on a journalist allegedly by individuals associated with the Minister during the NPP’s parliamentary aspirants’ vetting in Cape Coast.
In a statement issued on January 28, MFWA condemned the attack and emphasized the need for drastic measures to protect journalists' rights and ensure their safety.
The organisation commended the GJA for its decisive action and urged all media houses and journalists to adhere to the association's decision.
MFWA also urged the leadership of the New Patriotic Party to demand accountability from Hawa Koomson and compel her to identify the perpetrators for disciplinary action.
The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, however, has threatened legal action against the GJA President, claiming unfair treatment and lack of proper investigation into the alleged assault.
She is demanding a retraction of the media blackout statement or evidence supporting the assault allegation, citing her initial focus on parliamentary primaries as the reason for not taking the matter seriously initially.
