The Head of the Centre for Ageing Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Joseph Osafo, has advocated for district assembly elections in Ghana to be free from party colours and political influence.

Professor Osafo expressed concerns that involving political parties in the elections could lead to "monecracy," where monetary inducements and other political pressures might corrupt the electoral process.

During an interview on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show, Professor Osafo emphasised the need for neutrality in district assembly elections, asserting that introducing political parties would also create a system where only the wealthy could participate.

"It's going to become a place for the rich, meaning if you have money, somebody can sponsor you to stand for the elections.

“I don't think that's the way to go because there are people who even if they don't have money but have a good mind and heart, they can help the nation," he stated.

The elections will see the selection of approximately 6,300 assembly members and around 31,000 unit committee members across the country.
