Human rights lawyer and Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Ghana's criminal justice system, describing it as outdated.

Mr. Sosu's proposal aims to align Ghana's legal framework with contemporary global standards.

During an interview with Citi News monitored by ModernGhana News, Mr. Sosu emphasised the need for reform, highlighting that criminal justice systems worldwide have evolved over time.

"Criminal justice is reforming all over the world, and the people who gave us these laws have long reformed them and moved away from outdated practices. So, why are we still putting them on our statutes?" Mr. Sosu quizzes.

The human rights lawyer argued that maintaining these outdated statutes without modernization is a form of legal neocolonialism.

He explained that Ghana is essentially perpetuating the colonial legacy by failing to upgrade its legal system.

"This is a form of legal neocolonialism because we are carrying on the colonial baggage, and, unfortunately, we are not looking at the peculiar circumstances of our case," Sosu added.
