The Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi East Dr. Patrick Boakye Yiadom has stressed the importance of ICT education at the basic education level.

He emphasized that in this digital age, access to the internet and other technologies is essential for learning new skills.

According to the legislature, equipping children at the basic level will help them appreciate the enormous benefits of ICT and make them competitive after school.

Dr. Boakye made these comments when he donated 100 tablets loaded with learning materials to four (4) schools in the Obuasi East district.

The beneficiary schools included St Cyril Anglican School, Diawuoso L/A, Odumase L/A and St. Joseph School.

The Member of Parliament said the donation was in sync with the one student one laptop policy of the government. "The move is part of the government’s effort toward the digitalization of the education sector in Ghana," he stated.

He urged recipients to use the tablets for their intended purpose and protect them.

The Obuasi East district education director Kwabena Owusu Nketia who lauded the MP for the donation also stressed on the importance of ICT education.

He encouraged the pupils to take maximum advantage of the tablets provided them by the MP in their studies.

The Education Director pledged his commitment to promote ICT education in the district saying the tablets will make teaching and learning of ICT much easier.

Mr Owusu Nketia again revealed that in their efforts to encourage reading among school children at the lower primary level, the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) had directed that children who are unable to read in both English and Ghanaian languages will not be promoted.

"We are doing this to develop the interest of school children in reading. We understand that when children are able to read, they will be able to excel academically," he stated.

Meanwhile Dr. Boakye earlier presented 3 packets of roofing sheets, 20 bags of cement and a trip of sand for the PTA of St Cyril Anglican School to complete classroom extension in the school.
