The National Chairman of the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has revealed the root cause of Ghana’s economic predicament.

He blamed the collapse of the economy on the ballooning size of the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government.

Speaking at a lecture dubbed "The True State of the Nation Address," held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Monday, March 20, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah noted that government expenditure keeps rising due to its large size.

General Mosquito, as he is affectionately called, alleged that between January and September 2022, an amount of GHS 59.4 million of taxpayers’ money was wasted on the president's operational enhancement expenditures.

The regional tour done by the president in the later part of 2022, according to Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, caused the nation GHS16.9 million.

Among several other things, the NDC in its address further noted that the presidency alone, due to its bloated size, has spent a whopping sum of GHS51.1 million.

"Another reason for Ghana's economic collapse is the expenditure on the bloated size of the government. Between January and September 2022, the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia-led government wasted the tax payer's monies as follows," he stated.

General Mosquito continued, "The President's operational enhancement expenditure caused the suffering taxpayers a mind-boggling GHS59.4 million. The fuel bills at the Presidency alone caused the taxpayer GHS51.1 million. The President's regional tours last year caused GHS16.9M."
