Armed Robbers Attack Drugs Store, Mobile Vendors, Traders; Two Wounded At Gbantongo Community Market

Suspected armed robbers have attacked Gbantongo community market in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

The incident which occurred on Sunday, July 19 at around 5:00pm caused fear and panic among community members in the area.

Many of the market women, mobile money vendors, drug stores and former Assemblymember of the area were robbed in the process.

The Assemblymember of Gbantongo electoral area, Hon. Cletus Assibilla Awini said four armed Men arrived on motorbikes at the Gbantongo market dressed in jackets and face masks.

He added that the armed men started shooting sporadically causing the traders in the market to run for their lives.

According to him, the armed men robbed a former Assemblymember Patrick Avoka, a drug store, mobile money vendors and traders.

He indicated that Patrick Avoka was returning from Zebilla market after selling his cow for Ghc2000 which was also taken from him by the armed robbers.

He said the armed men shot one Elijah Asouah, a unit committee member on the leg and stabbed another on the head.

According to him, the armed men ordered all market women to surrender their belongings or lose their lives.

Hon. Cletus said several calls were placed to the Ghana Police Command in the District Capital Zebilla but arrived late to the scene due to wrong direction.

Hon. Cletus calls on residents to be each other's keeper and report any strange movement by unknown people in the area for swift response.

The District Police Commander Supt. Ahmed Adam Mahama told ModernGhana news that his team found it difficult to locate the scene due to wrong directions given by the residents.

Superintendent Ahmed said when the police finally got to the scene, empty AK47 cells were retrieved from the scene.

According to him, the police has commenced investigation on the matter to fish out the perpetrators for the law to take its course.

He noted that the Command will bring back the police checkpoint in the area which was initially kicked against by the residents.

Supt. Ahmed assured the people of Bawku West District of maximum security for economic activities to thrive.
