Veterans to shake sports hall on Saturday

Accra, Oct. 4, GNA - Retired table tennis players will on Saturday, October 9, re-ignite the days of old when they clash in a championship dubbed "Veterans DHL Table Tennis Championship" at the Sports Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium. The championship, which is being organized by the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is to serve as a platform to reunite all old players of the sport and find a way of tapping their vast experience for the promotion and development of the sport in the country.

Over 30 veteran players including personalities likes Fred Aboagye, James Brown, Ebo Bartels, Chairman of the GTTA, Kwabena Yeboah and other veterans of the sport are expected to participate in the one-day event.

Mr Emmanuel Oteng-Aboagye, General Secretary of GTTA told the GNA Sports that DHL Postal Services Company has invested five million cedis into the competition as the official sponsors of the event. He said the amount would go into the purchase of equipment such as tennis nets and balls as well as provide refreshment for the competition.

According to Mr Oteng-Aboagye, the tournament would be organised along side an Under-12 competition to unearth more youthful talents. Mr Oteng-Aboagye said that cash prizes would also be given to outstanding players in the Under-12 category. He said the prizes range between 100-200 thousand cedis depending on the performance of the players.

The General Secretary said registration of players for the two events would be completed by the close of work on Friday, October 8 and called on interested players to register at the GTTA secretariat.
