Omonia Nicosia winger Ernest Asante celebrating after scoring against Granada on Thursday

Ghana forward Ernest Asante was on target for Omonia Nicosia on Thursday night but it was not enough to save the side from suffering a 2-1 defeat to Granada in the Uefa Europa League.

In an encounter in Group E played at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes, the exciting forward was handed a role to help his team look for a win to have a chance of progressing to the knockout stage.

Unfortunately, the Cypriot-based club had a slow start and conceded just after 8 minutes into the game.

Granada forward Luis Suarez found the back of the net with an assist from Alberto Soro to give the Spanish club a deserved lead.

Later in the second half, Ernest Asante shined in a bid to inspire Omonia Nicosia to a comeback when the experienced attacker scored with a fine strike on the half-hour mark after he was teed up by Jan Lecjaks.

Although the team hoped to push to get the winning goal, they failed in their effort as Granada netted a second through Alberto Soro to ensure they grabbed all 3 points at the end of the 90 minutes.

Playing 53 minutes of the game, Ernest Asante earned high marks for his efforts while meriting a SofaScore rating of 7.1.
