Africa's most expensive footballer Michael Essien has maintained his position in Chelsea's first team ahead of next season.

Essien is amongst 10 other midfielders and would have to show class to maintain a first team appearance with the arrival of Michael Ballack and Nigeria's teenage midfield sensation John Mikel Obi.

The former Lyon star's consistent display at the just ended FIFA World Cup is expected to grant him a regular starting place at the heart of the Chelsea midfield.

The Ghanaian received some rave reviews from the FIFA Technical Committee at the World Cup following his massive display.

He was given recommendation by the technical team even though he failed to make the grade for the "BEST 23 of the World Cup".

Meanwhile, Nigeria's John Mikel Obi, says he will defy the skeptics this season, following his inclusion in the first team of the star-studded English champions.
