Political parties, districts intensify campaign for Ahafo Region

The main political parties in the six districts seeking the creation of the Ahafo Region from the Brong Ahafo Region have joined hands with municipal and district assemblies in the areas to intensify their campaign for Yes votes in the referendum.

They have therefore constituted a publicity and advocacy committee, comprised of representatives of the assembly, political parties, civil society organizations (CSOs), traditional authorities and the media to strategize and implement a publicity campaign.

This, they believe will enable them to garner more votes in order to meet the constitutional requirement of a 50 percent turnout and 80 percent YES votes for the creation of the region.

The six municipalities and districts that petitioned the President for the creation of the Ahafo Region include the Tano North and South, Asutifi North and South and Asunafo North and South districts, whose request was subsequently approved by the Justice Brobbey commission.

According to the petitioners, the advocacy committee will embark on door to door campaigns, community durbars, and use of community information centres, religious groupings and personal interactions to achieve their target in the six districts.

District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi North, Anthony Mensah, disclosed this to Citi News in Kenyasi on his return from one such community engagement.

He said the creation of the region will not only facilitate the rapid development of the area but ensure the developmental gap between Ahafo and Bono was bridged.

“We want to be united in this struggle to liberate our people and we have constituted a holistic team to conduct the campaign in the communities for success. The issue is not about partisan politics but for development of Ahafo hence the inclusion of all stakeholders especially our political parties”, he explained.

He noted the area was lagging behind in development and therefore appealed to residents to turn up in their numbers to vote massively at the referendum.

Representatives of the political parties commended the move and pledged their dedication and support to ensure the creation of the region.

The DCE and his team have so far visited Obengkrom, Adjeikrom, Kwahu, Bogyampa and Adukrom, among other places.
