Somalia Somaliland Hosts Historic Women In Tech Africa Event
SEP 22, 2018 LISTEN

More than 200 women will gather in Somaliland this week as the nation hosts its first Women in Tech Africa event.

A stellar line up of speakers, including Dr. Cabdiwali Sheekh Cabdillahi Suufi, Minister of Telecomunication & Post and Hamda Ali from Somali Women in Technology will be at Hargeisa’s Maansoor Hotel today Saturday 22 September to discuss the importance of technology to the Somali economy.

The event, one of a number taking place across the continent as part of the high-profile week, which has an overarching theme of career and leadership, has also secured business speakers from a start-up accelerator and a start-up company.

Aisha Absia, Women in Tech Africa Chapter lead for Somaliland, has organised the event which will be a positive showcase for Somali women involved in technology.

“This is a significant and high-profile event as it will be the first time we have staged something of this magnitude that purposely looks to energise and focus on women in technology,” said Absia, who has held roles with technology innovators Samsung and Corning Incorporated.

“There are some incredible and inspirational speakers who want to share their experiences, and encourage other women to see technology as a pathway to socio-economic empowerment. The government’s support of this goes to show how important this event is to all.”

She added: “The purpose of Women in Tech Africa is to positively support communities with a three-fold mission, which is creating female leaders and role models for tomorrow, showing the world what a strong African woman is capable of achieving and to support African growth through technology.”
