The incoming Chancellor of the University of Ghana has urged the management of the institution to work together to ensure their products are beneficial to the nation.

Mary Chinery-Hesse promised to listen more to the management of the university so together, they will work to ensure the university retains its premier status.

She was speaking to the management of the University when they called on her at her residence in Accra to congratulate her on her appointment.

The former Deputy Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) succeeds former United Nations General Secretary, Kofi Annan when he retires at the end of July this year.

The delegation from the University was led by the Chairman of Council, Professor Yaw Twumasi; Vice-Chancellor Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu; Registrar, Mercy Haizel-Ashia and Director of Public Affairs, Stella A. Amoa.

Mrs Chinery-Hesse expressed her gratitude to management for the honour done her and visit to congratulate her.

She reminisced her years at Legon and paid glowing tribute to the Prof Twumasi for the important role played in her education as a student.

She assured the management of her willingness to ensure continuity and sustain the integrity of the University.

“Working with the United Nations makes you humble because you are interacting with the whole world. I promise that we will listen a lot and come out with the best for the university,” she said.

She added that “we are expected as an institution to be trail-blazers because our country is at the centre of the world.”

The Vice-Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission also pledged her full corporation in the attainment of the University’s vision of becoming a world-class research-intensive institution.

An ardent ambassador of Girl-Child Education, Mrs Chinery-Hesse promised to focus on girl-women empowerment in order to ensure that together with men, society is improved during her tenure.

Mrs Chinery-Hesse is the first female alumnus to be appointed Chancellor of the University of Ghana.

The Chairman of the Council, Prof. Yaw Twumasi expressed joy at her election and congratulated her on her new role.

He welcomed her to the premier University and assured her of the institute's readiness to work closely with her.

For his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu assured the incoming Chancellor of management’s utmost support in her new role to make the premier University a model for the country and the continent.

The Registrar and the Director of Public Affairs on behalf of management later presented some university publications and memorabilia to the incoming Chancellor.

The incoming Chancellor officially starts work on August 1, 2018.
