Kasoa: Chaos As Community, Private Developer Clash Over Land
19.04.2018 LISTEN

There was chaos at Amuzukope in Kasoa in the Central Region Thursday morning when a private developer and members of a community clashed over a piece of land.

The aggrieved residents, largely Muslims, vowed to protect with their lives, a tract of land that serves as their cemetery.

They gathered on the land to register their displeasure on Thursday morning after the private developer deployed some earth-moving equipment at night to destroy the fence and level the land for construction to commence.

Some of the protesters who spoke to Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba said they were the bona fide owners of the land in contention and will not permit any construction there.

“We were informed that our burial site was being destroyed so we rushed here to find some of the buried bodies outside their graves.

“If the contractor wants a land to develop, there are plenty lands in Kasoa and Winneba that he can go and buy,” one of the community members said.

They are asking the appropriate authorities to come to their aid to save their land from invasion as they have owned and used the land in question as a cemetery for over 20 years.

According to them, the private developer might have bought the land from the wrong person, urging him to check for the rightful owners of that property.

“He [private developer] should forget about the documents he is carrying around and go and take his money from whoever sold him the wrong land.

“This land has been to court and we won the case against him so we do not know what the contractor wants. We are not leaving here today, tomorrow, day or night” he said.

But the private developer told Joy News the issue had been in and out of court indicating the Appeals Court ruled in his favour in 2016.

The commander of the Kasoa/Offankor District Police who visited the disputed land, invited the two parties to present their documents for vetting Friday.
