Aburi Girls Emerged Winners Of 8th Young Debaters Competition

Miss Prisca Amponsah's oral dexterity has won her and the Aburi Girls Senior High School (SHS) bragging rights for winning The Young Debaters 2018 edition.

She gets an all-expenses-paid trip to the United Kingdom to represent Ghana at coveted The International Public Speaking Competition (IPSC) in May 2018.

Her runners-up were Jasmine Takyi-Acheampong of Achimota SHS and Daniel Mawunge Kweku Amanor from Presbyterian Boys SHS, Legon.

The 8^th edition of The Young Debaters organised by Young Educators Foundation (YEF) was crowned last Saturday at Impact Hub in Labone, Accra.

There were 20 participants from various secondary schools including Presbyterian Boys SHS, Aburi Girls SHS, Accra Academy SHS as well as Achimota SHS.

The students delivered their various prepared speeches, on the theme “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”

Brimming with ideas, they took turns to wow the audience with their interesting ideas.

The highly competitive oratory race served the audience with compelling speeches titled such as 'Let them be', 'I am a soothsayer', 'Mould tomorrow today'.

At the end of the sessions, 10 students from all four schools were selected based on their amazing performance to the next stage of the competition. They all received a medal each.

The impromptu speeches session began with each of the 10 remaining speakers balloting for a topic they had no prior knowledge about.

They were given 15 minutes to prepare after which they had three minutes to present their speech to the judges in the filled auditorium.

Some of the topics balloted were: 'The media control how and what to think', 'To be grown up is a state of mind', 'What is the difference between talking to someone and speaking to someone', 'Cities are meant for people, not cars'.

Throughout the competition, Ms Prisca Amponsah showed class as her arguments were more coherent and spoke to the topic it was not surprising therefore that she emerged the winner.

All speakers received certificates of participation, books and Indomie products.
