JAN 28, 2018 LISTEN

Twelve civilians and a policeman sustained gunshot wounds during the musketry at the coronation of Nana Effua Fiansi Sampong II, the Queenmother of Assin Darmang in the Assin South District of the Central Region.

Some of the injured persons were rushed to the Abura Dunkwa Government Hospital and St. Francis Xavier Hospital at Assin Fosu.

Two of them, said to be in critical condition, were referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

Chief Superintendent B. M. Bacho, the Assin Fosu Divisional Police Commander, who confirmed the tragedy in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said most of the affected persons had since been treated and discharged.

He explained that the Traditional Authority lawfully obtained permission from the police to maintain security, law and order but during the firing of guns on Friday, a bullet was misfired in an attempt by one of the musketeers to remove the cartridge from the gun.

The gunshot injured the nearby people including a police officer while celebrants took to their heels to seek protection amidst fear and panic.

Meanwhile, Mr Akwasi Frimpong, the Linguist, who is alleged to have mistakenly fired the gun, had since been in the custody of the police assisting in investigations.

The Police have also mounted a search for the owner of the gun who loaned it to the alleged suspect.
