Dr. Iddrisu Sulemana, Principal of Tamale College of Education, has expressed appreciation to government for restoring teacher trainee allowances.

He, therefore, entreated teacher trainees to use the allowances judiciously to achieve the purpose for which they were restored.

Government restored teacher-trainee allowances this year to help lessen financial burden on parents and teacher-trainees.

Dr Iddrisu said this during the ninth matriculation of the College in Tamale, held to formally welcome new students to the academic institution.

For the 2017/2018 academic year, the College received 1920 applications, out of which 1441 qualified for admissions but only 520 representing 36.07 per cent were admitted.

Dr Iddrisu said 'it is instructive to note that we tried our very best to admit as many qualified students as possible but we were unable to do so due to the constraint of space and human resource.'

He told the new students 'As you are ushered into the 'chalky fraternity', you must take cognizance of the fact that knowledge, discipline, tender-heartedness and patience are the hallmarks of the profession.'

He said 'these attributes must be nurtured in you to enable you function effectively as professional teachers in the 21st century.'
